If your family already uses Savvy Learning, here’s something you may not know:

In participating states, families can enroll in a program that covers approved educational expenses – including Savvy. No catch, no cost.

That program is OpenEd.

OpenEd currently serves families in Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, North Dakota, Wyoming and Utah – and they’re expanding.

What is OpenEd?

OpenEd gives families the flexibility of homeschooling with the support and benefits of public education.

Your child enrolls through one of OpenEd’s partner public schools. That partnership provides resources, but you direct the day-to-day education.

It’s not a rigid online virtual school, and it’s not traditional homeschool alone. Parents stay in the driver’s seat, with support when they want it.

For families in participating states, it’s 100% free.

How OpenEd supports your use of Savvy

Once enrolled, families can use program resources for approved educational expenses. Savvy Learning qualifies as an approved resource in the OpenEd marketplace.

That means:

  • You keep using Savvy.
  • You access Savvy and hundreds of other resources through the OpenEd marketplace.
  • You keep full flexibility in how your child learns day to day.

If you want to hear from a real family, Janssen Bradshaw – homeschool mom, founder of Everyday Reading, and Savvy co-founder – talked about her experience on the OpenEd Podcast. She shares how her daughter went from struggling to reading at an 11th-grade level, and why consistent, individualized instruction made the difference.

Who is this a good fit for?

OpenEd works especially well for families who:

  • Already love Savvy Learning
  • Are homeschooling and want financial support for curriculum
  • Value flexibility but want access to public school benefits
  • Participate in co-ops, microschools, or other local learning communities
  • Need adaptable schedules for athletics, travel, or entrepreneurship

Some families structure their days around core academics in the morning and projects in the afternoon. Some dive deep into passions. Some follow a classical path. Others build something entirely their own.

OpenEd doesn’t prescribe one model. It supports the one that fits your child.

How it works

The process is simple:

  1. Apply. Takes a few minutes to get started.
  2. Enroll. Complete a short checklist and required documents.
  3. Outline your plan. You outline the subjects your child will study.
  4. Learn your way. Choose the curriculum, resources, and schedule that fit your family – including Savvy.
  5. Stay connected. Submit simple weekly learning updates and receive guidance and support as needed.

What support looks like

Families enrolled in OpenEd have access to:

  • Teacher support and check-ins
  • Special education (SPED) services
  • Tutoring options
  • Educational resources and approved vendors
  • Student clubs and virtual activities
  • Parent community groups
  • Webinars and live Q&A sessions

You can use as much or as little of this as you want. Some families lean in heavily. Others prefer independence with occasional guidance.

What about college?

If college is the goal, OpenEd helps families build toward it.

Many colleges value self-directed learners who demonstrate initiative and ownership. OpenEd supports transcript building, early college opportunities (where available), and portfolio development to highlight your child’s strengths.

And if your family ever decides to return to a traditional school setting, OpenEd helps make that transition smooth. You’re not locked into one path.

Why families choose OpenEd

For generations, families were told there was one way to do school.

But some children thrive in traditional classrooms. Some thrive in smaller settings. Some need more time, more challenge, or more flexibility.

OpenEd exists for families who want to direct their child’s education without doing it alone – with real support, real funding, and real flexibility.
